I am currently laying in my small bed of my apartment in Florence looking up photographers on Google which my photography professor recommended for inspiration on our individual photo projects. My favorites so far are Sally Mann and Francesca Woodman.

I have never heard of either, but their photography is absolutely stunning. Sally Mann has the exact type of photo development and composition which excites me;
mostly overexposed portraits with remarkably clear details:

On the other hand, Francesca Woodman played around with shutter speeds, particularly long exposure times. Her photographs are quite unique since she explored with movement in her subject matter. The one below has an interesting contrast between the leaf skeleton the subject holds against her bare back, the subject herself, and the textured wall:

Like my new found interest in different photographers, I am inspired by many other  objects, ideas, people, and places. Therefore I have decided to write a blog about these inspirational things for my remaining four weeks here in Italy specifically targeted to my family and close friends as my readers. I promise you there will be wrong word choice, run on sentences, and misspelled words, so I apologize before hand. I will post randomly but at least once a week, so keep checking by and thank you for reading this.

  1. Sarah, I love it honey, your blog is beautiful to look at and definitely gives you a sense of Italy. Food photography is calling you. The pictures made me hungry, hum salad with fixings tonight does sound good.

    And of course I love the black and white photos that you shared. Their composition and strong light and dark areas are beautiful and textural.

    I'm so happy you are bloging. Talk to you soon,

  2. Sarah my dear!

    First, it is so wonderful to get a glimpse of what you are doing in Italy. I wish I were there with you-eating yummy salads, looking at photography, and exploring!

    Secondly, what especially caught my attention is your post on Sally Mann! She is my favorite photographer of ALL TIME. I adore her and her work. We can talk about her when you get home.

    Love you and miss you!

  3. Bella! Beautiful blog about food/life/culture/art/architecture/sensual senses of Italy and all..
    I wish I was there. Your commentary of the frescos is dead on with the snakes and all. Yes no one really speaks about the buildings surrounding the Tower of Pisa... Glad you added that to the mix of color, light, taste and sound in your blog.. I hope you let your art history teacher know how much you appreciate her. Art history would be a wonderful study for you. Go for it. I too love love love Sally Mann. She is a contemporary rebel/ photographer who never apologizes for her image making. Love the food shots and the salads look so yummy. Yes, you can't go wrong cooking from the markets in Italy is the best.
    I cannot wait to see your black and white images. I am sure they will add to your personal canvas/ of yet what is to be told in your "story". (Italy, travel, youth, life, etc). T'amo mi amore.. xxooo Annie
